A Musician King Fights For Instrumental Music
(John lived from 1603β1656. He came to the throne in 1640.)
John a patron of music and the arts.
He was a sophisticated writer on music.
John was a composer.
During his reign he collected one of the largest libraries on earth.
He founded a Music School in Vila Viçosa that "exported" musicians to Spain and Italy.
Among the King's writings is a βDefense of Modern Musicβ (Lisbon, 1649).
In the same year (1649) John fought a huge struggle to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in the Catholic Church.
We fight the same struggle today, to elevate Judeo-Christian music to the high-bar of biblical standards regarding praise and music.
