The most commonly named Portuguese author of "O Come All Ye Faithful" is King John IV of Portugal, "The Musician King".
(John lived from 1603–1656. He came to the throne in 1640.)
John a patron of music and the arts.
He was a sophisticated writer on music.
John was a composer.
During his reign he collected one of the largest libraries on earth.
He founded a Music School in Vila Viçosa that "exported" musicians to Spain and Italy.
Among the King's writings is a β€œDefense of Modern Music” (Lisbon, 1649).
In the same year (1649) John fought a huge struggle to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in the Catholic Church.
We fight the same struggle today, to elevate Judeo-Christian music to the high-bar of biblical standards regarding praise and music.
