Here's the most important story-construction information you'll ever get:
Dramatic Success = Tension

TENSION = HOPE + FEAR

T = H + F
We HOPE the protagonist wins & survives, yet we FEAR they will lose & die.
T=H+F is probably the most important single thing you can learn about script-writing.
That one concept is worth a film-school education.
If you have tension from strong and evenly balanced hope vs. fear, you have gold.
Isolate and articulate your central dramatic question,
and
attend to the details to guarantee that the audience cares about the answer to that question.

Why do people go to movies?
ANSWER: The same reason they do anything: TO GET PLEASURE.

Where does pleasure come from?
ANSWER: The release of tension.

That's why movies will ALWAYS be popular.
Movies provide pleasurable release in a way a never-ending video game and the never-ending internet never can.
But to compete with video games, your story has to be well-constructed.
Unstructured video doesn't work in the 21st century.
